Sean Wharton,

MD, PharmD, FRCP(C)

Clinical Advisor, Obesity Medicine and Pharmacotherapy

Sean Wharton is the Medical Director of the Wharton Medical Clinic in Burlington, Ontario, a community-based internal medicine weight management clinic which adopts a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach in the long-term treatment of obesity. Dr Wharton earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 2001 before completing a residency in Internal Medicine at McMaster University, Ontario, in 2005. He works as an internist at both the Toronto East General Hospital and Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr Wharton also holds doctorates in both Pharmacy and Medicine and is a certified American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) Diplomate.

Dr Wharton's research focuses on bariatric medicine and type 2 diabetes, and he has published or contributed to many peer-reviewed articles on a range of topics in these fields. He has also led research investigating the importance of patients having access to trained professionals in weight management, and is a strong advocate for government-funded medical care for patients with increased weight.

 

Dr Wharton is the lead author of the weight management section of the 2013 Canadian Diabetes Guidelines, which was co-authored by Dr Arya Sharma and Dr David Lau – both recognised leaders in obesity research. Dr Wharton is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Canadian Obesity Network, the Canadian Association of Bariatric Surgeons and Physicians.
